Thanksgiving is an annual national holiday in the United States and Canada which traditionally celebrates a plentiful harvest and other blessings of the past year. Like with any popular export from Northern America, Thanksgiving has found it’s way across the pond in a guise of food-inspired themes and discount days. I headed to the home of American cakes on our very own turf, Hummingbird Bakery, to try a selection of their Thanksgiving cakes… Giving me plenty of food for thought as I reflect on an abundance of reasons to be thankful this season.
When it comes to creative seasonal themes Hummingbird don’t disappoint. It wasn’t that long ago we saw their spectacular display of Halloween decorated cakes, and the latest seasonal theme to whizz by was their Thanksgiving selection of treats inspired by the season of good harvest which ran from 21st November to Thursday 28th November.
Think swirls of cream cheese frosting, sprinklings of ground cinnamon and warm spices, sweet pumpkin with golden pastry crusts, luxurious deep-filled pies to devour – these were some of the classic Thanksgiving indulgence!
The Hummingbird Bakery Thanksgiving selection included classics such as: Pumpkin Whoopie Pie; Pumpkin sponges with a Marshmallow Fluff and cream cheese frosting filling, Pumpkin Cheesecake; indulgently creamy spiced pumpkin cheesecake, Pumpkin Pie; golden spiced pumpkin filling in a pastry pie crust, Pecan Pie; gooey pecan filling in a pastry pie crust, Mississippi Mud Pie; rich chocolate filling in a pastry pie crust topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings and a tangy Lemon Meringue Pie; zingy lemon filling in a pastry pie crust topped with Italian buttercream meringue and torched until golden.
Lots to be thankful for…
Thanksgiving isn’t just about turkey and awaiting Black Friday deals! On a broader spectrum it’s about being thankful, spending time with loved ones – and of course – sharing food! For me, this time of year is a perfect pitstop for reflection… just before the rush of the Christmas season and New Year celebrations. I’ve personally had a very challenging month (to say the least!), and could easily dwell on the lows; having my purse stolen from my bag as I stopped to view the Carnaby Christmas lights, My Soho Times magazines arriving later than expected from the printers (and the type font being a test for your eyesight!)… but then I also don’t have to think too far back to reap the benefits my own good harvest which came in the form of launching My Soho Times earlier this week – with not just one, but two launch events!
Exude gratitude for guilt-free pleasure!
I sat at Hummingbird Bakery in Wardour Street taking spoonfuls of my Thanksgiving treats as a reward for the hard work of the past few months… With every bite of sweet and creamy indulgence, I converted it into guilt-free pleasure by reflecting on all the things I’m grateful for (like having you read this blog post!). Try it next time, with every spoon full – say something you’re grateful for then there’s less of the guilt and more gratitude going out to the universe!
My heart is full, as is my belly is from these delicious treats from Hummingbird Bakery! I’m so thankful to everyone who has support My Soho Times in a big or small way… May this harvest be plentiful!
