Our Editor, Kai Lutterodt aka The Soho Girl, puts the e.l.f makeup range to the test to discover if any of their products are a match for her richly melanated skin… The results are refreshly surprising!
The representation of dark-skinned black women within the beauty sector has historically been limited. Societal and media perceptions of beauty often centre around lighter skin tones, reinforcing the notion that proximity to whiteness equates to attractiveness. Thankfully that’s all changing! It is encouraging to observe a positive shift in recent years towards inclusivity and diversity, with brands such as Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty really pushing that movement forward.
Kai testing e.l.f makeup
During a recent visit to PurePR with our Beauty contributor, Grace Alexandra, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that one of the beauty brands their look after, e.l.f. Cosmetics, an afforableable makeup brand, produces a comprehensive range of shades that includes darker options. Today, it might seem odd that I’m taken aback by this, however that’s simply because it’s not so long ago individuals, with darker skin tones, such as myself, had very limited makeup options and had to seek out brands (often in the depths of ethnic minority neighbourhoods!) specifically catering to Black and Brown skin. Everyone else could have the luxury of accessing their beauty products available in High Street establishments such as SuperDrug.
That’s probably why I never got really got into makeup. Instead, I placed greater emphasis on skincare, an area of beauty which is at least more accessible. Consequently, I have become more comfortable embracing my natural appearance without relying heavily on makeup. That said, I do appreciate the occasional assistance that a natural makeup look provides, sort of like a soft Instagram filter! That’s where my natural makeup look comes in. So, come along and GRWM (get ready with me) – check out my IG post below for the e.l.f products I used!
Overall, I was super impressed with my finished look – a very natural, warm glow. My star product is the halo glow liquid filter. I would say, a little goes a long way so remember to apply sparingly whilst building up to your desired coverage! And an important tip – moisturise your face before applying makeup.
Let me know what you think!
