The fashion industry has long been known for its obsession with youth and the relentless pursuit of unattainable standards of beauty. However the refreshing injection of diversity in recent years, is a trend which hasn’t gone unnoticed. Now, enter the first-of-its-kind senior runway collaboration between virtual reality curator Malik Afegbua and New Silver Generation (NSG), resulting in a groundbreaking show at AFWA (Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam) on August 30th. Editor Kai Lutterodt shares more.

The Rise of the New Silver Generation

As London Fashion Week kicks off, I’m reflecting on a pivotal moment in fashion history I was privileged to witness a few weeks ago at the AFAW. I had the honour of covering the two-day fashion show on commission by the sustainable lifestyle brand Botaniq Luxe.

It’s been surreal to witness the phenomenal achievements of NSG since the memorable al fresco lunch in Soho with its founder, Antony Fitzgerald, three years ago. It was at that meeting over calamari and and Souvlakis that I learned about Antony’s idea to bring together his network of badass mature models in response to the industry when it says, We don’t know where to find older models of colour.” This subsequently led to NSG’s debut on the cover of My Soho Times magazine in Autumn 2021!

Day 1 of AFWA was a truly remarkable event that celebrated the power of diversity, highlighting the incredible talent of the NSG. These seasoned models, with their stunning silver hair and unwavering confidence, shattered stereotypes with every stride, and proved that beauty knows no age limit. They were the epitome of grace and elegance, capturing the attention of the audience and leaving a lasting impression.

From high fashion editorials to prestigious advertising campaigns, they have partnered with renowned brands, becoming true inspirations for aspiring models everywhere. Their journey is a testament to the fact that the world of fashion embraces and cherishes uniqueness in all its forms.

In addition to their undeniable charisma and grace, the NSG models (aged 50 and above) are also influential advocates for ageing gracefully and living life to the fullest. Through their social media platforms and public appearances, they are spreading the message that getting older should be embraced as a new chapter of self-discovery and empowerment.

“The coming together of New Silver Generation with Malik Afegbua at Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam was perfect synergy.” Antony shared of the collaboration.

The visionary: Malik Afegbua

When it comes to AI, we don’t all see eye-to-eye on the topic! It’s a little like marmite – you either love it or hate it. Some perceive it as a as a threatening concept, while others regard it as a promising future. One notable figure who has made significant contributions to the field of AI-generated images is renowned Nigerian artist Malik Afegbua. With his visionary artistry and pioneering efforts, Malik has mesmerised audiences worldwide with his AI-generated images of older models adorned in exquisite garments. Whether you agree with AI or not, his images, which have gained media attention worldwide, offer food for thought on wider topics around diversity, feminism, and ageism. He stands as a trailblazer in the ever-evolving world of AI-generated art.

“The feeling was surreal seeing it come full circle, bridging the Gap between technology and Fashion as we celebrate the elders. So it was many layers of appreciation for me; from the collaborators to the models it was amazing.” Malik shared with me of the event.

NSG honoured at AFWA

The Day 2 AFWA finale saw the inauguration of a an awards ceremony to applaud the accomplishments of distinguished individuals within the expansive AFWA network.

Antonty Fitzgerald was honoured with an award of recognition for his invaluable contributions in promoting models of colour within the fashion and beauty industry. His pioneering work with NSG which provides a platform for mature models of colour has made a significant impact, and continues to attract new collaborations.

Representation Matters

The fashion industry is conveying a compelling message by showcasing models of color who possess maturity on the catwalk and in advertising campaigns. This deliberate inclusion serves as a powerful reminder that beauty transcends societal boundaries. Moreover, it enables the industry to effectively target a financially capable demographic.

By featuring mature models of colour on the runway and in campaigns, the fashion industry is sending a powerful message that beauty knows no boundaries. Plus, it makes sense for the industry to effectively target a financially capable demographic, often neglected or limited to frumpy clothing a stereotyped elderly person... These were the style icons of the 60s and 70s, they invented what we know as fashion today – hello! Intentional actions to showcase representation, especially in most marginalised groups, pave the way for a more diverse and accepting future. Now, it’s down to the global Fashion Week stages to follow suit.

So, the next time you flip through a fashion magazine or watch a runway show, keep an eye out for the stunning presence of the silver foxes. They are proof that age is not a limitation, but rather a badge of honor to be worn with pride. Let their unapologetic confidence, wisdom, and authenticity inspire and empower you to embrace your own unique journey, as it has with mine.
