Dive into the rich tapestry of African and African diaspora cultures through their specially curated classes. Black British literature of the early twentieth century

Course start date:  Sat 21 Oct 2023

Discover Black British Literature in the twentieth century, featuring early work that has become part of the canon. Includes works by Samuel Selvon and Una Marson and an exploration of key themes and styles of narration for the literature of the period. 

African resistance against empire

Course start date:  Wed 25 Oct 2023

The end of the Second World War marked a watershed in African history, catalysing resistance against colonial rule that had been in place for a century. This module examines the history of such growing anti-colonial resistance from the late 19th century onwards. 

Black Latin America

Course start date:  Wed 1 Nov 2023

This course introduces and critically examines the concept of a Black or African Latin America through the region’s history, philosophy, activism, politics, diaspora, memory and culture.

Afrocentric drumming

Course start date:  Fri 3 Nov 2023

Explore your enthusiasm for drumming with African rhythms and their variations. Enjoy improving your individual and group playing skills and learn how to apply a variety of percussive instruments to any musical style or setting.

Contemporary Black British Literature: Zadie Smith, Bernardine Evaristo, Benjamin Zephaniah, Roger Robinson

Course start date:  Mon 6 Nov 2023

An introduction to late 20th and early 21st Century Black British Literature, the course features authors such as Zadie Smith, Bernadine Evaristo and Benjamin Zephaniah, as well as T.S. Eliot Prize-winning poet Roger Robinson. While looking towards the future, the course also examines the history of Black Britain – with many of the books explored locating their characters within an historical context. 

The African diaspora in Europe: Migration, community and resistance

Course start date:  Mon 6 Nov 2023

This course explores African migration to Europe, community formation, and resistance, providing insights into the diverse experiences of the African diaspora in Europe since colonial times.
