Trust the Flow: Aligning with Tao Chang Wisdom | My Soho Times

As Autumn draws to a close, Tao Chang Teacher Dr. Aylin Dogan shares her wisdom, along with practice tips to stay grounded.

One of the core principles of Taoism is Wu Wei, often translated as “non-doing.” While it may bring to mind inactivity, Wu Wei actually refers to a specific way of being and acting—one that emphasises effortless action through alignment with the natural flow of life. In Autumn, this wisdom is particularly relevant, as the season encourages us to slow down, reflect, and release. Letting go is a profound wisdom and practice for both our life and soul journey. When we release grudges, resentment, anger, and frustration, our hearts fill with love and light. This allows us to resonate more deeply with the Tao—the ultimate source of positive information, energy, and matter. In this state, we embody effortless action, naturally aligning with the Tao wisdom and teachings.

Here’s how to apply Wu Wei in everyday life this season:

Letting Go and Trusting the Flow

Just as trees effortlessly shed their leaves in autumn, Wu Wei teaches us to release what no longer serves us—whether it’s emotional weight, harmful habits, or rigid plans that steal life’s joy. Letting go of negative actions, words, thoughts, and emotions is key for finding peace. I hear you; it’s not always easy! But there’s a simple, powerful tool that can help: the practice of Forgiveness. This is something I’ve learned from my teacher, Tao Grandmaster Dr. & Master Zhi Gang Sha, and it has transformed many lives. You can follow this practice or create your own version that resonates with you.

Forgiveness Practice

Have an intention in mind, a feeling to let go or a relationship to transform. Feel what bothers your heart, think of the situation, totally relax and then follow the words below:

Dear all souls (or name a person) whom I have hurt or harmed in any way, please forgive me and my ancestors for creating anger and frustration, doubt in you. (Clarify your negative feeling, thought or situation that you experience). And I unconditionally forgive you and your ancestors for hurting me in this way. You are free to go.

(Repeat three times the below mantra)

I forgive you.
You forgive me.
Bring Love, Peace, Harmony.

Trust in Divine Timing

Wu Wei teaches us to trust life’s natural flow, allowing things to unfold in their own time rather than forcing outcomes. Autumn offers an ideal time to reconnect with the natural rhythms of our personal journey, having a slower, more deliberate pace. Adjust your goals to match the present conditions, embracing a pace that feels natural and unhurried. This way, you can create space for growth and transformation without resistance or pressure.

Aligning Action with Ease

Wu Wei also reminds us that action can be joyful when we approach tasks with lightness and an open heart. As you align with the season’s energy, let go of any need to control outcomes and instead infuse your work with passion and happiness. Approach your tasks not with stress but with a sense of play, letting your heart’s smile guide you. You are a channel through which natural energy flows, so allow your creativity and inspiration to move freely, turning every action into an expression of joy and fulfilment.

Practice

Start fresh by getting a new journal for the season. Use it to reflect on your goals and how you feel about them. In your reflection, try alternating any negative thoughts with positive ones, motivating yourself to bring that smile onto your face.

Create a calming atmosphere—light a candle, burn incense, and play meditative music. Take a moment to go inward, and from that place of stillness, let your next steps flow naturally onto the page.

Embracing Rest and Reflection as Keys to Purposeful Action

Tao wisdom is deeply rooted in the Yin-Yang principle, teaching that balance between rest and action is essential for harmony. Just as Yin represents stillness and receptivity, and Yang embodies movement and action, both are equally important for a well-rounded life. Autumn, with its cooler and quieter energy, is a time to embrace the Yin aspect—rest, reflection, and rejuvenation. This season encourages stepping back from over-scheduling and embracing deep relaxation, which, in Tao wisdom, is a form of action in itself. By recharging our energy through rest, we prepare for future Yang endeavours.
