Our guest blogger and lunch date Althia shares her lunch date experience with The Soho Girl at Le Garrick…
Le Garrick, a French restaurant in Covent Garden, has been around since 1986. Having had such a lovely lunch at a decent price, it’s easy to see why it’s remained a popular choice with tourists and theatre goers to this very day.
Complete with wooden interiors and cute red and white checked table cloths, it’s got a very authentic French bistro vibe going on! The menu is full of classic French dishes such as ‘Escargots de Bourgogne’, ‘Boeuf Bourguignon’ and ‘Authentique Cassoulet de Toulouse’ so it was super hard to make a choice!
In the end, for ‘Les Entrees’, we went for an Onion soup and a portion of Frog’s legs. The onion soup managed to pack a tasty punch whilst being very light and it was topped off with a gooey, melting cheese, making it a perfect winter warmer dish. The Frogs’ legs, to our delight, were also very light and delicate and superbly flavoured with a delicious garlic and herb mix (and yes, the legs did taste like chicken)!
Buoyed by the tasty starters and a basket of French bread and butter, I was looking forward to my main dish – salmon and ratatouille with a side of sautéed new potatoes – and it did not disappoint. The salmon was cooked perfectly, was fairly meaty and, like the accompanying generous portion of ratatouille, flavoured very nicely with a lovely basil flavoured topping and assorted herbs and spices.
Kai, The Soho Girl, in the meantime, ordered mussels and frites. Again, no dinky little portions here! The mussels were served in a delicious white wine sauce; I’m quite a fan of creamy white sauces so it was definitely to my taste (quite a feat as I’m not the biggest fan of mussels but in this instance, I quite enjoyed them).
Unfortunately, we were too full to order dessert despite the menu boasting some of my favourites including Crème Brulée, Fondant au Chocolat and Tarte au Citroen (yum)!
So as you can probably tell, I’d definitely recommend Le Garrick if you’re in the mood for some warm, hearty and generous portions of tasty French food that’s great value for money (especially considering its location in the West End)… Just make sure you leave room for dessert!

‘Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrive!’ is the cry traditionally heard from bars and bistros when Beaujolais is finally released. Come and join in the fun on Thursday November 21st from 10am when Le Garrick will be celebrating the new season’s Beaujolais Nouveau – that much-ballyhooed fruity and fresh vintage!
Traditionally, the release cannot happen before 12.01am on the third Thursday of November, and although celebrations originate in Paris, London has welcomed this tradition, evident at Le Garrick where a huge party is always in full swing on this special day.
