Experience the Unexplored Flavours of India at Chourangi this October

Eating at Chourangi will take you on a rich culinary journey into Calcutta, West Bengal. Inspired by the culture of Chowringhee, a neighbourhood in Calcutta steeped in history and vibrancy, Chourangi brings elevated traditional dishes from the 300-year-old region to the heart of London’s West End!

The decor is inspired by architecture with bright cream walls, wooden ceiling fans and rattan furnishings. The smooth jazz and glistening bar help to create a luxurious space for diners to enjoy. Before dining, one might enjoy one of intriguing cocktails on offer. Especially the ‘Date above the cloud’ which comes highly recommended by bartender, Sandron.

Experience unexplored flavours of India with the limited edition Durga Puja Specials Menu

During the month of October, Chourangi’s Chef turned restaurateur Anjan Chatterjee has crafted a diverse menu that celebrates the 10-day Durga Puja festival. Durga Puja is a very significant religious event in the Bengali festival calendar as it represents the celebration of victory over evil. Due to popular demand, the special Durga Puja menu is now available throughout October.

The menu features delicacies that are a testament to the region during the festive time of Durga Puja. It is an inclusive menu suitable for vegetarians, vegans, and meat eaters, as well as being halal. We shared the dishes on the Durga Puja specials menu and were pleasantly surprised by the unique flavours and ingredients.

We started with the Calcutta Fish Fry, or Calcutta’s nod to fish n’ chips, a crunchy Gobindo bhog rice crusted seabass and shoestring potatoes with a punchy mustard kasundi sauce. It was a lovely starter and a great indication of what was to come. Next came the main and side dishes. Our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomach’s when ordering. I was apprehensive that the portion sizes would be on the smaller side, a general constitution when it comes to more high-end Indian restaurants. However, I was proven wrong and how glad I was.

My favourite dish was the Kosha Chingri. It had big, juicy prawns that swam in a delicious, deep red sauce made from smoked chillies and roasted onion. The braised lamb in the BNR Mutton Curry melted apart and the rich sauce with hints of tamarind and ginger was perfectly swept up by the Koriashutir Kochuri bread. The most intriguing dish had to be the Rajbarir Kofta, morsels of curd cheese koftas lying on top of a coconut-cashew gravy spiced with cinnamon. The Cholar Dal was also spiced with cinnamon as well as coconut, which was usurprising as Bengali cuisine is typically a blend of sweet and spicy flavours. We also ordered the Spinach, Pumpkin Subzi from the main menu which was not only seasonal but had lots of heat. Regrettably, we are too full for dessert but the Baked Rosogolla with rose, pistachio, and saffron flavours, and the Gurer Payesh rice pudding with date palm jaggery sounded delectable.

Overall, the menu is a fantastic option that not only celebrates Durga Puja but a great way to relish in flavours that embody Calcutta with your friends, family and loved ones.
