The start of November marks the beginning of International Stress Awareness Week, dedicated to spotlighting the impact of stress on mental and physical health and showcasing resources and strategies available for managing stress in healthy ways. In today’s fast-paced world, finding moments of relaxation and tranquility is crucial for mental wellbeing. Our editor, Kai Lutterodt, shares her recommendations for kicking stress to the curb.
As someone who often wrestles with stress and burnout, I’ve had to take measures to prioritise my mental wellbeing, and spot the warning signs indicating the need for a break before reaching a breaking point. It’s not always easy keeping balance, however when it comes to carving out some much-needed personal time, few things say ‘me time‘ quite like a visit to the Spa! Here’s a round up of some of my favourite way to actively reduce stress this season…
1. Floating for Body and Mind at AIRE Ancient Baths

Set in a candlelit historical building, the environment of this London hidden gem removes you from the modern world and concept of time. The absence of mobile phones is one of the rare moments in our lives where our devices are not in reach. An experience at Aire Ancient Baths can work wonders to reduce stress levels due to the different properties of the baths. Hot and warm water are known at reducing cortisol levels, cold water stimulates the vagus nerve which in turn moves us into our rest and digest mode. The unique flotarium bath has a high salinity concentration which increases the density of the water – this allows you to float effortlessly. Floating has been shown to have many benefits for both body and mind and early research has also shown that regular floating can help to reduce signs of anxiety and stress.

2. Journaling Self-affirmations with Lovendu

Because writing is part of my everyday work; from composing emails and articles to pitching new ideas and strategies, I hadn’t put much consideration into the value of journaling… until my Lovendu journals arrived in the post. Journaling is a powerful tool that allows us to articulate our thoughts, emotions, and experiences on paper. It offers a safe and private outlet for unburdening our minds, leading to enhanced clarity and a broader perspective. The Wellbeing Journal (£22) has been thoughtfully designed to improve your mental health by enabling you to be creative and to reflect on your life, which can be both empowering and impactful. Additionally, it includes dedicated sections to track habits, goals, progress, and draw inspiration.

3. Spa Time at J Wellness Circle, St. James’ Court, A Taj Hotel

Centrally located is J Wellness Circle at St. James’ Court, Taj Hotel, which offers a range of spa treatments and facilities including sauna and steam room. I’m a massive believer in the power of heat and humidity; they effectively soothe muscles, alleviate aches, and induce a state of tranquility. These relaxation methods provide a profound sense of calmness, helping to relieve both physical and mental tension. What’s more, the heat facilities leave a positive impact on overall well-being by promoting better blood circulation, detoxification, and enhancing mood. A visit to the spa not only effectively manages stress levels, but also improves quality of sleep. I always leave feeling light on my feet, knowing my body has had a much-needed respite, even if for a short while.

4. Hit the Gym, Dance Classes, or at Home Workouts with Everyone Active

Exercise is not only good for your physical health, but it also has a positive impact on your mental well-being. Regular exercise has numerous benefits for both the mind and body. When you work out, your body releases endorphins – the “feel-good” hormones. These interact with receptors in the brain, reducing pain perception and promoting a positive feeling. Exercise also boosts self-confidence by achieving fitness goals and can improve cognitive function, memory, and focus. Additionally, physical activity acts as a natural detox by eliminating toxins through sweating. So whether you choose to hit the gym, join a dance class, or simply incorporate more physical activities into your daily routine at home – the important thing is to move your body!

5. Detox from home with the HigherDOSE Sauna Blanket

Since discovering HigherDOSE post-lockdown winter of 2021, I honestly can’t imagine my life without it. The convenience it offers by allowing you to detox in the comfort of your own home, especially during the colder autumn months when stepping outside might be less appealing, is just one of the reasons to love it. This sauna blanket uses infrared technology to help flush out toxins through sweating, and offers various various temperature levels. Wear comfortable, skin-covering clothing and socks, or use a towel insert (additional purchase). Whether you’re seeking to detoxify your body, relax your mind, boost your mood, burn some calories, or enhance the health and appearance of your skin, the HigherDOSE Sauna blanket offers a comprehensive solution. It does however come with a hefty price tag investment: £839.

And of course, preventing stress doesn’t have to come with a price tag! Simple activities such as meditating, taking long walks, maintaining a healthy diet, managing our time on social media (I’m working on this!), and prioritising connections with loved ones can all play a significant role in minimising stress, and ultimately – kicking it to the curb!
