Let’s talk oysters! These firm British favourites on the seafood menu are often associated with luxury, sophistication, and culinary elegance. As the colder months draw to a close, does that bring the oyster season to an end? Kai Lutterodt explores debunking a few myths, and shares where you can enjoy these delicious seafood delicacies in Central London!
Best eaten September to April
You may have heard the saying that oysters are at their best eaten during the months with the letter “r”, i.e September through April, as they are in a stage of maturation and tend to be plumper and more flavourful during this period. Does the arrival of Spring signal the end of the oyster season? Oysters spawn during the summer months, causing them to be less flavourful. However, modern oyster farming and improved food safety practices have debunked this myth, making oysters a safe and enjoyable delicacy year-round. Phew!
Aphrodisiac or not?
Another perception surrounding oysters is their purported aphrodisiac qualities. Throughout history, oysters have been linked to increased libido and romantic allure. While the science behind this claim is inconclusive, the elegant and sensual nature of consuming oysters may contribute to their reputation as a food of love and desire… So, I guess it’s a round of oysters on your next date then!
