Soho’s Underground Scene: 7 Basement Bars You Need to Know | My Soho Times

Prepare to descend to the depths… when it comes to a truly grungy Soho basement drinking experience, you’ve gotta head for the cellar. It’s a vibe like no other. Enjoy!

The Soho Girl’s anniversary shoot at Gerry’s Club featured in My Soho Times 5th Anniversary issue. Pre-order here!

1. COLONY ROOM GREEN

In 2008, the iconic Colony Room Club closed its doors, signalling the end of a remarkable era. Many believed that Soho’s vibrant bohemian scene would never reclaim its former status without its cherished sanctuary. However, after more than a decade of absence, the Colony Room Green has emerged, paying homage from the basement of a Mayfair restaurant, to Soho’s artistic life.. The original Colony Room Club, founded by Muriel Belcher in 1948, is famously described as “a small, darkish mirrored room which can get amazingly full.” Curator Darren Coffield has masterfully captured the essence of the original space, complete with the cheeky banter of words like “cunty” drifting on the decor. This intimate venue also showcases an array of musical performances and book exhibitions. It’ll be the host venue for our autumn print issue on Tuesday 29th October. Tickets available here.

2. TRISHA’S

This iconic basement bar is loved by everyone – old and young, rich or poor – and you’ll find them all in this Greek Street den. It’s hard to believe that just over a year ago this venue, officially called the New Evaristo Club but better known as Trisha’s, in honour of its longtime matriarch, faced the threat of closure following a licence review. The overwhelming response from punters to keep it open is a testament to the power of the people and proves the strength of the community. It rightfully deserves its reputation as one of the last bastions of old-school Soho—a late-night sanctuary steeped in a rich, boozy history filled with colourful Soho characters. Remember, it’s a members-only club, so best to know someone who knows someone who can get you in.

3. GERRY’S CLUB

Gerry’s Club may appear unassuming from the single door at the bottom of Dean Street, but much like Trisha’s, it’s one of the last of the classic drinking dens. And don’t let its exterior fool you. This is a member’s club, and while not everyone may gain entry, those who do are in for a treat. Once you step inside and make your way down the stairwell, you’ll find live music, vibrant Soho characters, and an atmosphere that’s reminiscent of yesteryear… and a seat, if you’re lucky enough to snag one..

4. ZIMA KARAOKE & BAR

If you’ve ever sat outside Bar Italia on Frith Street enjoying an alfresco coffee, you will have noticed the charming white townhouse façade of Zima. While its dining floors showcase the intriguing flavours of modern Russian cuisine, it’s downstairs that the real drinking experience unfolds! Enjoy homemade vodka shots and dive into a vibrant karaoke experience. The in-house signature nastoyka, infused vodka, offer unique flavours including Sea Buckthorn, Strawberry and Basil, Gooseberry, Horseradish, Garlic and Plum. The bar has just re-opened after undergoing a makeover, so now’s the time to pay a visit to this subterranean treasure just waiting to be explored in Soho.

45 Frith St, London W1D 4SD

5. RAINCALL

Formally La Capannina – a longstanding strip club – this nightclub still carries traces of its wild past — and we’re not just talking about the punters. A pole which has seen better days, and indeed better moves, stands on what you might call a stage. And the dance floor? Let’s just say it’s a floor that wasn’t designed for much dancing in mind, so there’s fierce competition for space among those who dare to bust a move. Neon lights hit the glow-in-the-dark walls, the music (a mish-mash of pop, RnB, Afrobeats and rock) is blasting. It’s dingy, a little seedy even… but my gosh do I love it! Best for groups (take turns to keep eye on each other’s drinks for the love of God). Oh and make way, this Soho girl is heading straight for that pole!

21 Bateman St, London W1D 3AL

6. House Party

House Party is the exciting alternative to upscale nightclubs in the West End! Created by British-Ghanaian musician Stormzy in partnership with Cream Group, this venue launched with an unforgettable party featuring £1 drinks. Three months in, it’s clear House Party lives up to the hype, with lines stretching onto Poland Street.

With seven floors, you’ll find red cups, cosy sofas, Stormzy’s first car parked in the basement, retro beer pong, personalised karaoke stations, and private reservable areas across various themed spaces.

You’ll find me in the kitchen by the DJ booth!

7. The Little Violet Door

The Little Violet Door, a vibrant new bar in Soho’s Carnaby district, following The Little Scarlet Door, which opened two years ago on Greek Street. Known for its fun and eclectic vibe, this venue offers a lively atmosphere with a mix of contemporary and eclectic interiors, including colourful prints and disco balls. Formerly the iconic Bag O’Nails music venue, it features distinct rooms including a full-size bathroom, and a kitchen disco, perfectly embodying the house party experience.
