Remembering Herbert “Flash” Gordon: Friendship and the Soho Flaneurs

Yesterday, on a beautiful crisp autumn afternoon, we gathered to pay our final respects to our dear friend and much-loved character across the London scene, Herbert Gordon, known to us as “Flash.” Flash was a vibrant part of our community, known for his role as part of the “Soho Flaneurs,” a close-knit group of stylish gentlemen who found joy in strolling Soho’s streets and visiting coffee shops such as Bar Italia (which they coined their HQ). His radiant spirit and genuine warmth left a mark on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him, leaving behind a legacy of friendship that will forever resonate in our hearts.

The farewell service took place in the tranquil setting of Brighton, where Flash had recently called home with his partner, Beverley. It was a fitting location, as its serene atmosphere mirrored the calm and reflective mood of the gathering. Friends and loved ones came together to celebrate a life well-lived, sharing stories and cherished memories that highlighted Flash’s unique character and impact on their lives.

Alan Weeden gave a heartfelt tribute on behalf of the Soho Flaneurs, reminding us of the enduring bonds of friendship that Flash forged later in life. His words resonated deeply, emphasising Flash’s ability to connect and uplift those around him. He had a remarkable talent for bringing people together, creating a sense of community many of us will cherish forever.

A Tribute to “Flash” by Alan Weeden:

I want to talk about Friendship.

Flash was a friend to so many of us.

He was part of our group dubbed the Soho Flaneurs, based at Bar Italia in Frith St. But what is a Flaneur? Well its men who do nothing in particular, just wander around, sit and drink coffee ( or a breakfast beer in his case ) and watch the world go by whilst talking about well, about anything, but in our case, usually fashion and music !! So you see he fitted right in!!

I look out now and see so many of his friends from that group here today and so many from the dancing scene at Chez 66 club, The Modcast and of course the Kings Cross boot sale.

Wherever you went with him was always a joy, whether walking in London and lately in Brighton, he seemed to know everyone.

Always immaculately turned out. Always a different hat. Always a different belt buckle.

He was our buddy, our friend, we shall all miss him terribly.

YA DIG IT

As we reflected on Flash’s life, laughter mixed with tears, and it became clear that he was not just a friend, but a beloved figure who enriched the lives of countless people. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, reminding us to celebrate our friendships and savour the moments we have with one another.
