What is it about the British summer season that inspires people to embrace the joy of dressing up?
Maybe it is the promise of Pimms in the sunshine, countryside glamour, statement hats, or simply the excuse to escape London for the day. Either way, after recently attending the Royal Windsor Horse Show for the first time, I finally understood the appeal.
Less than an hour from Waterloo, Windsor felt like stepping into a completely different pace of life. From castle views, riverside pathways, elegant occasionwear and one of the most quintessentially British atmospheres imaginable.
Pretty in Pink
I’m calling it now: pink is the summer social season colour, so whether you want to experiment with just a splash of it or go full-on bold, now is your opportunity to! This vibrant hue not only adds a refreshing pop to your wardrobe but also exudes a sense of fun and excitement that’s sometimes needed in social gatherings. If you’re one to base your outfit on your hat, here are a few I spotted at the Chapeau London pop-up in Soho’s Hamyard Village that are sure to elevate your style to the next level and make a chic statement: from wide-brimmed sun hats to playful fascinators, there’s something for everyone. Why not start here and let your imagination run wild with your summer attire?

I opted for a red and white Rachel Skinner Millinery hat I’d spotted on social media, which, surprisingly, matched my hot pink outfit. Rachel Skinner is a renowned British milliner creating ready-to-wear and bespoke hats since the 1990s, known for use of vibrant colours and detail, having dressed Royal Family members. A selection of her hats are available at the Chapeau London pop-up shop in Soho for a limited time, while her main boutique in Lewes, Sussex offers private appointments for bespoke commissions.
An Afternoon at the Royal Windsor Horse Show
The day began with lunch at Thai Square Windsor before heading to the showgrounds in full hot pink and a statement hat by Rachel Skinner Millinery. Inside, the atmosphere felt far more relaxed than I had expected. Unlike Ascot’s famously extravagant dress codes, many attendees leaned into classic countryside sporting style over full occasionwear, perhaps influenced by the slightly drizzly weather reminding us that the British summer had not quite fully arrived yet. Which, admittedly, made my hot pink tailoring and statement hat stand out even more.

From horse displays and shopping villages to Pimms stops and the surprisingly entertaining Defender horsepower versus horse power challenge, it quickly became clear why events like this remain such a huge part of the British social calendar. We also later learnt that King Charles was in attendance — which somehow made the entire day feel even more British.
Windsor itself also deserves far more attention as a stylish summer escape from London. Beyond the horse show, there is Windsor Castle, riverside dining, boutique shopping and plenty of opportunities to turn a simple day trip into a full countryside weekend.
And while the Royal Windsor Horse Show may now be over for another year, the wider British social season is only just getting started.
Royal Ascot (16–20 June 2026)
If there is one event that defines British summer occasionwear culture, it is Royal Ascot.
From tailored suiting and extravagant millinery to champagne receptions and celebrity spotting, Ascot is less about racing expertise and more about embracing the theatre of the day itself. Even those with little interest in horse racing will appreciate the fashion spectacle and atmosphere.
It is also surprisingly accessible from London, making it ideal for a glamorous day trip without needing to leave the city for too long.
Royal Windsor Flower Show (6 June 2026)
For a softer and more relaxed countryside aesthetic, the Royal Windsor Flower Show brings together florals, garden party fashion and beautiful scenery within Windsor Great Park. ()
It feels less formal than racing events, but still carries the polished atmosphere the British summer season is known for.
Henley Royal Regatta (30 June–5 July 2026)
For those who prefer riverside elegance over raceday glamour, Henley Royal Regatta offers a different kind of British summer experience.
Expect striped shirts, linen tailoring, rosé by the river and a social scene that feels both traditional and effortlessly stylish. It is one of the chicest excuses to spend a summer weekend outside London. ()
Guards Polo Club Summer Season
Polo season also deserves a mention for those looking to fully immerse themselves in countryside luxury culture.
The events at Guards Polo Club combine sport, socialising and fashion in a way that feels distinctly old-school British — but increasingly popular with younger lifestyle audiences too.
Ultimately, what these events all have in common is their ability to transform a simple train journey out of London into something cinematic.
Maybe the British summer season is less about racing and royal tradition than it is about slowing down, dressing up and embracing experiences that feel a little more intentional.
And honestly? I could probably use more of that.
