The festive season is a time for jubilant carolling and joyful conversation however, for those with undiagnosed hearing loss, it can be challenging to fully engage in the celebrations. This Christmas, RNID is encouraging everyone to look out for the signs of hearing loss in themselves and their loved ones. Hearing loss is often gradual, and most people don’t even realise they are struggling until it becomes evident in social situations. Kai Lutterodt shares more from the charity’s Christmas campaign.

Understanding the Signs of Hearing Loss
Do you notice someone turning the TV up louder than others prefer? Do they struggle to follow conversations in noisy places like pubs or restaurants, or frequently ask people to repeat what they’ve said? Perhaps they find it hard to hear on the phone, feel like others mumble, or have a partner who thinks they’re not listening.
Recognising the early signs of hearing loss can make a significant difference in addressing the issue. Here are some common indicators to be aware of:
- Increased Volume: Notice if someone is frequently turning up the TV or radio louder than others prefer.
- Struggling in Noisy Environments: Pay attention to those who have difficulty following conversations in bustling places such as pubs or restaurants.
- Frequent Requests for Repetition: If someone often asks others to repeat what they’ve said, it’s a potential sign of hearing loss.
Other signs may include challenges hearing on the phone, feelings that others are mumbling, or a partner expressing frustrations about communication. If any of these feel familiar, it might be time to check your hearing. Ignoring these signs can lead to isolation and frustration, especially during festive gatherings filled with abundant laughter and conversation.

Steps to Take for Better Hearing Health
Hearing loss affects 1 in 3 adults, according to RNID, the national charity supporting over 18 million people in the UK who are deaf, have hearing loss, or tinnitus. Awareness of these statistics can motivate individuals to be proactive about their hearing health and encourage discussions that may help remove the stigma around hearing loss.
The good news is that addressing hearing loss is more accessible than ever. Simple steps can help individuals and their loved ones take charge of their hearing health. A FREE online check at rnid.org.uk can be the first step on the journey.
This Christmas, let’s keep everyone part of the conversation and welcome an environment of inclusion and support for those with hearing challenges.
