A Colourful Tribute to Frida Kahlo Has Arrived on Carnaby Street | My Soho Times

One of Soho’s most iconic streets has been transformed into a vibrant open-air celebration of Frida Kahlo, inviting Londoners and visitors alike to experience the legendary artist’s world in an entirely new way.

Launched this week, ¡Frida Icónica! has taken over Carnaby Street with a striking public art installation inspired by Kahlo’s life, work and enduring legacy. Stretching across the full length of the famous shopping destination, the installation brings together bold colour, Mexican tradition and contemporary creativity in the heart of Soho.

Suspended above the street are hundreds of vibrant papel picado banners – the intricate decorative paper flags that have become a symbol of Mexican culture and celebration. Created by artist Alejandra Ballesteros, the designs feature motifs inspired by Frida Kahlo’s identity, heritage and artistic vision, turning Carnaby Street into a joyful canopy of colour.

At the centre of the installation is a 3.25-metre anamorphic mural made up of four portraits of Kahlo. From the right viewpoint, the artwork seamlessly forms her unmistakable profile, creating an interactive experience that encourages visitors to stop, explore and take in every detail. As daylight fades, the installation transforms once again as it illuminates the street into the evening.

The installation has been created in partnership with Tate Modern to celebrate the opening of Frida: The Making of an Icon, a major exhibition exploring how Kahlo evolved from a little-known Mexican painter into one of the world’s most recognised cultural figures.

Featuring more than 30 works by Kahlo alongside pieces by artists she has influenced across generations, the exhibition examines not only her remarkable artistic achievements but also the themes of identity, resilience, self-expression and culture that continue to resonate today.

Bringing that celebration beyond the gallery walls feels perfectly at home in Carnaby Street. Long recognised as one of London’s most creative neighbourhoods, the area has a rich history of embracing individuality, fashion, music and artistic expression. This latest installation adds another layer to Soho’s cultural landscape while offering everyone the opportunity to experience art completely free of charge.

Whether you’re planning a visit to Tate Modern, spending the day shopping in Soho or simply looking for a colourful summer stroll, ¡Frida Icónica! is well worth adding to your list. It’s a striking reminder that some of London’s most memorable cultural experiences aren’t always found inside a gallery.

¡Frida Icónica! will showcase on Carnaby Street until 31 August 2026, while Frida: The Making of an Icon runs at Tate Modern until 3 January 2027.
