Chase away the January Blues with Puppy Yoga | My Soho Times

Are you looking for a new activity to brighten up your new year, and boost your mood? Research shows spending quality time with a dog (or other any animal for that matter) can have a positive impact on your mood and your health. Pets can be calming stress-fighters… but what if you don’t have any? My Soho Times and My London Times editors, Kai Lutterodt and Justina Matuleviciute, put the tail-wagging yoga trend to the test… is Puppy Yoga all that it’s cut out to be? Justina shares more…

There is a new way to get active and spend some time around dogs – puppy yoga. These classes are popping up all over London (and on our social media feeds too!), and are a great way to get some puppy time into your life! As both a dog-lover and yoga fanatic, Puppy Yoga London blends the best of both worlds, and I can confirm – this is one of my favourite activities I’ve tried so far!

I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a big boost of positive emotions. Yoga and puppy combination is guaranteed way to keep you smiling throughout the 1 hour session. This unique class is more fun and playful than the traditional yoga classes, and is structured in intervals of yoga movement and playtime with the fur babies. Once the warm-up is over, for the most part, it’s completely up to you if you choose to follow the instructor or cuddle with one of the puppies.

These classes are suitable for all fitness abilities from complete beginners to experienced practitioners. Just like practising yoga, spending time with dogs / puppies has been proven to be a great way to reduce stress and ease anxiety. You’ll need to make sure you’re prepared for a little bit of chaos. Puppies are playful and energetic, and they can sometimes be a little bit too much for yoga class. But that’s all part of the fun, right?

Easy flows are designed to be easy and fun, if you can concentrate around the playful fur balls running around and trying to get your socks, strands of hair. We advise not to wear your favourite workout outfit just in case you make friends with a more mouthy little rascal. However, some puppies might decide to take a nap in your hands and your class will turn into yin meditation instead of a more vigorous flow so cosy jumper would be great option to wear to keep you warm.

And what about the puppies? The class will not just benefit you, it’s also a great way to socialise puppies between 6 -12 weeks old with new people outside of their home environment in a safe and controlled space. These sessions help puppies gain more confidence and help them start their new lives with their forever families prepared to grow as much more confident dogs, better behaved when they’re out in public and less weary of strangers.

Puppy Yoga classes make great gifts too! Whether it’s a self-care, positive mood-boost and active treat for yourself, loved one or friends!

We hope you will try out this fun experience and if you do, please share it with us! We would love to see some of your moments – tag us on Instagram @mylondontimes @mysohotimes!

Benefits of Puppy Yoga

It is important for puppies to socially interact at an early stage of their life. It provides them with confidence and teaches them about the world they live in and how they should react in social situations. A well-socialised puppy is more likely to grow up to be a friendly and outgoing dog.

Interactions with animals especially dogs/puppies has been proven extremely beneficial to our mental wellbeing. Interacting with animals can provide stress-relieving physiological benefits and helps an individual  experience more positive emotions.
